Department of Zoology is not only one of the oldest Departments of the college but also leading in every sphere of activity. This Department was established by erstwhile J&K Government in the year 1957.
The Department with sufficient accommodation and having huge rush of students, still manages and provides its utmost to the students. The department has to harbor the additional burden and manage the administrative affairs of other departments like; Sericulture and Psychology as well.
The Department aspires to attain distinction in providing cutting edge learning experience, intellectual freedom and innovative teaching opportunities in order to become first choice of students.
The Department of Zoology strives to impart internationally bench-marked quality education to its students.
The department is running UG course in Zoology with faculty strength of six along with 3 permanent teaching faculty, 3 contractual teaching staff. The department is however lucky in having a good hardworking team of seven non-teaching members who really shoulder their responsibilities for making smooth functioning of the department possible.
The department made some marvelous achievements like, silk worm rearing (cocoon raising) was done for the first time by sericulture students. Later the silk worms were supplied for various institutions for practical work as prescribed in their syllabi.
Apart from these, Zoological expeditions to high-altitude areas of Kashmir Himalayan regions for faunistic biodiversity study and for faunal collections, from the sea-shores and desert areas of India, are essential activities of this department.
Besides, the above mentioned tours the department organized a science exhibition on 17-08-2011, in the college campus in which all science departments participated, presented and demonstrated their latest techniques and tools to the audience (students and guests). The exhibition was really an eye opener and innovation for our young energetic student community.

The department of Zoology comprises two well- equipped Laboratories for conducting practicals and two store rooms and the HOD’s room. An independent Computer Lab with Internet connectivity and all relevant software for students. A full-fledged small Library, as a supplement to the College Central Library on the Campus, having more than 550 books. A new, well equipped central facility has been established.
Besides, a Departmental Museum, Department has got state-of-the-art scientific equipments, the important ones are: advanced microscopes (with digital Image Analyzers), Centrifuges, Electrophoretic units, Digital pH meters, Water analysis Kit, Spectrophotometers, Centrifuges and Audio-visual aids, including LCD and Magnetic Board.
