About the department & the subject

Arabic is a Dynamic, International and one of the oldest Semitic Languages of the World. It is spoken natively by almost 300 million people living in 22 countries from Africa to the West Asia (Middle East). Arabic is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Being liturgical language for them, Muslims around the globe learn and speak Arabic to varying degrees, making Arabic 5th most spoken language in the world.

India is a country where the tradition of Arabic Studies stretches over centuries. Indian Scholars of Arabic Language have huge contribution in the service of Arabic Language.

The department of Arabic in this college is as old as the college itself. Since then the Department has produced hundreds of students who are serving the society in different fields.

The department imparts in the students the knowledge of Arabic Syntax and Morphology, Introduces to them the classical as well as Modern Arabic Prose and Poetry. Owing to the importance of translation in modern globalised World, the department exposes the students to this vital field and teaches them translation of basic Arabic constructions and sentences into English/ Urdu and vice versa. The department takes special interest in developing the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of the students.

Based on a step-by-step approach, the course is divided into learning blocks each of which focuses on practical, useful and manageable language. The students develop the ability to recognise and formulate the letters and move towards the first steps of reading and writing simple words, phrases, non-verbal sentences and simple paragraphs in the first two semesters. From 3rd semester onwards, the students are gradually introduced to the more complex constructions and verbal-sentences.

In order to develop the speaking skills in the students, the department also offers a 4-credit spoken Arabic skill course for the fourth and fifth semester students. With the intention of exposing the students to nitty-gritty of the world of commerce, the department also offers a 4-credit skill course by the name of ‘practical and commercial Arabic’ to the 6th semester students.

The departments also offers a 6-credit MIL Arabic course to those non-Arabic students of 3rd and 4th semesters who want to get acquainted with the essentials of Arabic language.

Vision

The Prime vision of the department is to set high standards of excellence in the preservation, creation and dissemination of knowledge through teaching and training the students in multiple dimensions of Arabic Language and Literature. The department seeks to nurture in the students all the four basic skills of language learning and to produce competent students with excellent theoretical knowledge and practical skills which fulfils our vision to promote scientific temperament and community service.

  • To impart quality education at all levels of teaching i.e. grammar, translation, language and literature.
  • To introduce the non-Arabic students to the essentials of Arabic language through courses like MIL.
  • To give special attention to enhance the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of the students.
  • To organize seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia in order to give students basic information about Arab societies and cultures.
